THE “AUSTRALIAN” BLENDS
|
Australian wine folk are nothing if not experimenters – and they are not shy either! Where else can you find Piedmontese grapes growing next to grapes from Madeira and the Rhone Valley? There is a sense of adventure in this that builds on the traditions of the old world, bring a decidedly new world twist. Just as merlot is used to flesh out the sometimes austere character of cabernet sauvignon the world over, syrah was once used in Bordeaux to do the same thing ~ adding spice, fruit and gusto to a reserved cabernet. In Australia that blend has become a classic, finding itself the base for many of the country’s most highly regarded and serious wines and this selection, from some of Australia’s better known producers, deftly illustrate the style. |
